To avoid Apostille and embassy legalization common mistakes, you can check the following tips before presenting your documents:

• Indicate the country in which the document will be used.

• Obtain County certification.

• Right government agency issued document (i.e. your document must be authenticated by the State government it was issued by, not where you currently live).

• Signature on document is from a known government official.

• Get the county clerk\’s signature. The county clerk must certify the notary public\’s signature. If a person has a divorce decree or other documents coming from the circuit clerk\’s office, these documents should not only be signed and certified by the circuit clerk or a judge, but it must also be notarized and certified by the county clerk.

• Right county clerk signature: in some counties, if the county clerk isn\’t available, a deputy county clerk may be designated to sign the document being apostilled or authenticated. However, not all deputy county clerks are authorized to sign these documents.

• Get the signature of a Notary Public (exactly the same signature as he/she was commissioned) for legal documents such as agreements, affidavits, and powers of attorney, academic documents. If the documents are not notarized then they cannot have an Apostille.

• The Notary Public’s expiration date is on the document correctly, cleraly and completely. Verify the expiration date of the Notary Public’s seal, to be sure that it hasn’t already expired or is about to expire. An Apostille cannot be provided on a document when the Notary’s commission has expired.

• Certificate is not too old.
