Documents issued anywhere in the US and need to be used abroad must be authenticated in order to be recognized in the foreign country. If your document is intended for use in a country that does not belong to the Hague Convention (abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents) you must obtain along with the Apostille, the signature of the appropriate embassy.

This process includes: Authentication of your documents by the Department of State in Washington D.C; and Legalization of your documents by each embassy or consulate of the country for which your specific documents are going to be used.

The following countries require Embassy Legalization for international use of documents:

Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burma, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, Cape Verde, Chad, Chile, China, Comoros, Congo, Costa Rica, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea - Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Micronesia, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Palau, Palestine, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan , Tanzania , Thailand , Togo, Tunisia , Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Because Bahrain does not belong to the Hague Convention, a US citizen who wants to use commercial, legal or personal documents for use in Bahrain needs to legalize these documents through the Embassy of Bahrain. This means that the consul will affix his own certificate and signature after checking that an Apostille has been issued by the Department of State in Washington D.C.

This procedure applies as well for Bahrain citizens who have a US document such as a marriage certificate or educational documents.

The Embassy of Bahrain legalizes the following US legal documents: Birth certificate, certificate of divorce, certificate of single status, criminal record, death certificate, emission statements, employment certificate, health certificate, marriage certificate, police record, powers of attorney, proof of income, trademark registry, certificate of free sale, resolution, distribution agreement, article of incorporation, appointment/distributer, authorization of agent, assignment, board resolution, certificate of incorporation, by laws, US patent application, trademark application, certificate of good standing, free sale certificate, price list, financial statement.
